Nutrition is the study of nutrients and foods and in the body. It is a science that includes the study of how food and nutrients nourish the body as well as the study of human behaviors related to food.
The Registered Dietitian is the nutrition and food professional. The letters 'RD' after a person's name means that he or she has received rigorous training in nutrition science and/or dietetics. An RD has successfully completed:
- academic experience (bachelor's in nutrition, dietetics or related field)
- supervised experience (internship or similar hands-on experience)
- passed the national registration exam for dietitians
In addition, a Registered Dietitian must maintain continuing education in their field. The Commission on Dietetic Registration, the credentialing agency, establishes these criteria for the American Dietetic Association.
The title "nutritionist" is not a legal title in most states. Regardless of their educational or work experience anyone can claim to be a nutritionist; many though, have minimal education or training in nutrition science. In a few states the title Licensed Nutritionist is legally defined. For accurate information on food and nutrition issues consult with a Registered Dietitian.
